The NATO Undersea Research Centre Marine Mammal Risk Mitigation project was founded in 1999 to investigate the possible relationship between atypical mass strandings of beaked whales in close spatial and temporal proximity to active sonar experiments and naval exercises. The project goals include the development of risk mitigation protocols, tools, and technologies to mitigate risk to marine mammals during active sonar experiments and naval exercises.
